Humble Beginnings in Tamil Nadu
Born as Pichai Sundararajan on June 10, 1972, in Madurai,
Tamil Nadu, Sundar grew up in a modest two-room home. His father, an electrical
engineer at GEC, and his mother, a stenographer, valued education deeply.
Though resources were limited, the environment at home was rich in
encouragement and curiosity. His early fascination with technology began with a
rotary telephone — Sundar had an uncanny ability to remember every number
dialed.
Academic Excellence: The Foundation of a Genius
After schooling in Chennai (then Madras), Sundar earned a
degree in Metallurgical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology
(IIT) Kharagpur, where he was recognized as a brilliant student. His academic
journey then took him abroad — he pursued an M.S. in Material Sciences and
Engineering from Stanford University, and later, an MBA from the Wharton School
of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was named a Siebel Scholar and a
Palmer Scholar.
Joining Google: A Turning Point
In 2004, Sundar joined Google as a product manager. One
of his earliest tasks was to work on the Google Toolbar, which allowed users of
Internet Explorer and Firefox to access Google search easily. His big
breakthrough came with his role in the development of Google Chrome — the web
browser that revolutionized user experience and now dominates the internet.
Thanks to his consistent performance, sharp mind, and
leadership qualities, Sundar quickly rose through the ranks. He played key
roles in launching Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Maps enhancements.
CEO of Google and Alphabet: A Global Leader
In August 2015, Sundar was named the CEO of Google, and
by December 2019, he was promoted to the CEO of Alphabet Inc., Google's parent
company. Under his leadership, Google has continued to innovate in fields like
artificial intelligence, hardware, and cloud computing, while maintaining its
dominance in search and advertising.
